Adventures in Staining

I've been on the hunt for vintage crates for awhile now. They're not hard to find online but the prices are wild. I found these guys at Michael's for less than $10 each, so thought I'd give a go at staining them myself. I actually found staining pretty easy... it's nice to be able to control what the wood will look like! I consider this practice for a few big wood projects I have brewing. ;)

On the two smaller ones I first sprayed and wiped with a gray stain, then coated with a walnut stain with a brush. The bigger crate is solely the walnut (my favorite).
Have you tried staining? Any tips?!

  1. I have stained many things, my brother in law introduced me to it when I said "Yeah! I'll just delute the brown paint" he pointed me to stains which give the wood a better look. I re-stained a kitchen table I made with dark brown top and white legs the other day and I love the outcome, I couldn't have gotten it doing it any other way than staining.

You did a great job, I have those crates as well...much better price than antiques! I love how you styled them in these photos with the white contrast, I think dark wood and white is my favorite at the moment

  2. These look great! My mom is the queen of staining. Everything in our house that is stained my mom did her self. She always tells me to be careful of runs and to never apply with a brush but a cloth. It seems to work better that way.

  4. I just started staining some furniture items recently. I think it changes the look on things! My tip is to always wear gloves. Especially with the dark stains!

You did a fantastic job on the crates!
